It started just after 9/11, seeing the response of the USA with the support of Tony Blairs "New Labour" to bomb the crap out of a country with no actual evidence or justifucation, yet another unjust war where countless lives would be lost. An image popped in my head which I scribbled down, drawing a rudimentary design writing the words "gun with condom". At the time I was 19 and had started an art course after failing media (I later dropped out, like most of the things in my life), telling my tutor about the idea he seemed intrigued but possibly thought it pretentious, after all there isnt much skill in placing a condom over a plastic gun and calling it art. A friend of mine was staying at my mums house and had been out buying a variety of silly objects, one was a toy pistol which fired rubber bullets, he went home and we lost touch, I kept his toy gun in a box for about three years until one day in 2004 I decided he probably wouldn't mind me using it for such a noble creative cause, so took a board from the back of a frame and covered it in "no more nails", then placed a condom over the gun, attatched them together and called it "Piece", this had taken far too long.
April 2006; after noticing a trend for T-Shirts with prints of guns on them, my mind began to race, imagining my sculpture in a similar stylised fashion, printed on a t shirt, so began to play about with a photograph taken to showcase "Piece" on this very website, as I have no training in photoshop, it probably took more time than it would someone else but after one, two, three, four... and so on versions, i finally came up with my final design after several "final" designs in August 2007. This had also taken far too long.
It is now 2008, seven years after my initial thought that violent people are wankers and that all a gun is is a phallice, a few months ago a friend of mine who runs a T shirt printing business approached me saying he wanted to make and sell the shirts, he made me two prototypes, one black, one white and I was amazed, my idea was realised, then yesterday I spent some time beginning a first run of the shirts in different sizes so that we can begin to sell them at this years festivals starting with Download in Donnington next weekend, seven years to get to this stage, a stage I never even thought possible, this has taken no time at all!
